Chapter 11
Brief Summary-
Businesses constantly came up with ways to increase production and lower wages, which discontented the workers. When unions were formed, the workers were quickly fired and replaced, forcing them to find new jobs, Jurgis learned the Packingtown was just one big firm: Beef Trust. There was a conflict at the bank where Marija’s money was held so she withdrew it and kept it with her. Jurgis and Ona also started a bank account. Jurgis sold his vote for money during elections. Winter was very hard in the workers. In the fog inside, work became even more dangerous, especially when an animal got loose. Winter made transportation difficult. Jurgis hurt his ankle and was sent home after he realized that he was not able to work like that and went to his boss. When he could not work, Jurgis and Ona’s money situation became even worse. They had just enough money to live extremely basically. It was hard for them to convert culture into American ways. While Jurgis was in bed with his injury, Teta Elzbieta would sit with him. Little Antanas (the baby) cheered Jurgis up.
